Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering in Australia is common, respected – and one of the smartest moves a new arrival can make.
It builds local work experience, references, English practice, networks and friendships, all at once.
Why volunteer, especially as a migrant
- Australian experience and a local referee for your resume
- English practice in a real, forgiving environment
- Insight into Australian workplaces before your first job
- Friendships and community standing - many volunteers at migrant services are former new arrivals
Good to know
- Genuine volunteering is unpaid by definition - but it should never replace paid work you're entitled to, and expenses are often reimbursed.
- Volunteers are covered by the organisation's insurance; formal organisations will induct you properly.
- Some roles need a police check or Working with Children Check - organisations usually arrange these.
