Your First 30 Days
Once the essentials are done, your first month is about building foundations: income, English, health and community.
Pick the goals that fit your situation – nothing here has a hard deadline except your visa conditions.
Work and income
- Write your resume the Australian way - 2-3 pages, no photo, no date of birth. Template in Jobs and Work Rights.
- Check your work rights on VEVO before accepting any job.
- If eligible, register with Centrelink and an employment services provider.
- Learn the minimum wage and your rights - everyone in Australia is protected by the same workplace laws, whatever their visa.
English and education
- Register for AMEP - free English tuition for many visa holders, with free childcare during class.
- Enrol children in school; ask about free intensive English for new students.
- Join your library's free English conversation group.
Health
- Find a regular GP and book a first check-up - ask for a free interpreter when booking.
- Transfer prescriptions and vaccination records.
- If you've been through hardship or trauma, specialised free support exists — see Health and Medicare.
Home
- Understand renting: bond, lease, inspections and your rights. Never pay cash without a receipt.
- Set up electricity, gas and internet in your name - free comparison on government energy sites.
Community and belonging
- Attend one local event this month — find one on the calendar.
- Consider volunteering: local experience, references and friendships.
